What Daily Life Looks Like When You Suspect You Have ADHD

You’ve been hearing about your potential since school: teachers said it in middle school, professors said it in college, managers have said it in every job since. And yet you consistently underperform that potential in ways you can’t fully explain. You know what you’re capable of, but you just can’t seem to access it reliably, and the gap between what you could do and what you consistently deliver has been following you since school. At some point you stopped trying to close it and started trying to hide it.

Hiding it takes more energy than most people realize. You’ve developed an elaborate system of workarounds: alarms for things other people just remember, notes to yourself that you sometimes forget to read, a daily routine held together by willpower that frays the moment something unexpected comes up. You compensate constantly, and the compensation itself is exhausting. By the end of the day, you’re depleted less from the work you did than from the effort it took to appear like someone who has their life under control.

The places it shows up most are the places you can’t fully control. Open-ended projects with no hard deadline sit untouched until they become emergencies. Emails that require a thoughtful response get buried and resurface three weeks later. You start a household task, get pulled away by a thought, and end up doing something completely different twenty minutes later with no memory of making the switch. This has been going on your entire adult life, and calling it occasional absentmindedness undersells what’s been happening.

Your relationships absorb the impact. Your partner has learned that they need to follow up on anything they ask you to do, because your brain has a limited window for holding onto tasks that aren’t right in front of you. The follow-ups feel like nagging to both of you. You resent being reminded, they resent having to remind, and the cycle repeats. If someone has ever told you they can’t count on you, or that they feel like they’re managing the relationship alone, that stayed with you longer than they realize.

You may have spent time in therapy for anxiety, depression, or both. The treatment probably helped with the surface symptoms, the worry, the low mood, the feeling of being overwhelmed. But the engine underneath, the distractibility, the time blindness, the inability to consistently convert intention into action, never responded to that treatment. It’s possible that what you’ve been treating as anxiety or depression is downstream of something nobody thought to evaluate.

You’ve taken online quizzes, read the symptom lists, and recognized yourself in most of them. You’ve been sitting with that recognition for weeks or months, wondering what to do with it and whether a formal evaluation would tell you anything you don’t already suspect.

You stop wondering. The question that’s been with you for years (do I have ADHD or is something else going on) gets answered through a structured clinical assessment. The diagnostic impressions are documented in writing. Whether the answer is ADHD, something adjacent, or something else, you walk away with clinical clarity instead of another month of suspicion.

You stop adding every missed deadline and forgotten errand to the lazy-undisciplined column. The story you’ve been telling yourself since middle school (that you’re not trying hard enough, that you lack discipline, that you’re not as capable as people think) has a different explanation. The next time you forget something, the meaning of the forgetting changes, even if the forgetting itself doesn’t stop right away.

Your partner reads the report and stops interpreting your forgotten promises as a values problem. The next conversation about the unreturned text, the missed appointment, the bill you said you’d pay starts from a clinical frame instead of a moral one. Whether you both build systems together, find a couples therapist, or just have one different conversation, the framing has changed.

You walk into your next annual review with clinical language for what your manager has been calling “inconsistent.” Whether you choose to share the report or just use the framework to think differently about the feedback, the meeting doesn’t have to land the same way it has every year. “Has so much potential” has a different meaning when you understand the structural reason the potential hasn’t been getting realized.

The report becomes the document you bring to your psychiatrist or primary care provider. The medication conversation finally has a clinical foundation. The anxiety treatment that helped some but didn’t reach the underlying focus problem can be recalibrated around what’s underneath it, if your prescriber decides that’s appropriate. The final prescribing decision rests with your medical provider, but the conversation starts from a different place.

The next career conversation, with your manager, your partner, or yourself, has a clear-eyed read on what your specific brain does well and doesn’t. The job decisions you’ve been making blind start to have criteria. The workbook offers strategies you can try (body doubling, externalized deadlines, breaking tasks down to the smallest possible first step) and the report itself becomes a starting point for working with a therapist or coach who specializes in adult ADHD.

What an ADHD answer changes

How the Online Specialized ADHD Assessment Works

The assessment takes place over secure, HIPAA-compliant video in a single two-hour appointment. We talk through your current symptoms, how things have been since you were a kid, and how all of it shows up at work, at home, and in your relationships. The conversation follows a structured framework while staying conversational, meaning I work through a defined set of topics but let your specific story shape the questions.

The framework I use is called the DIVA-5, the standard tool used in research and specialty clinics to evaluate adult ADHD. It walks through focus, follow-through, restlessness, impulsivity, and how those have shown up across different parts of your life through specific real-life examples instead of abstract questions. I also ask about anxiety and depression, since those often go hand-in-hand with ADHD and can muddy the picture if we don’t look at them together.

By the end of the appointment, we have a thorough picture of how your brain works and whether ADHD is driving the symptoms you’ve been living with. I take the next 7 to 10 business days to score the interview, write up the findings, and deliver your written report.

What Receive from Your ADHD Assessment

A two-hour diagnostic interview conducted over secure video. A structured conversation that covers your current symptoms, developmental history, functional impacts, and screens for conditions that can coexist with or mimic ADHD.

A comprehensive written report delivered securely within 7 to 10 business days. The report includes presenting concerns, diagnostic findings across inattention and hyperactivity/impulsivity, functional impacts, your strengths, and targeted recommendations. It’s written for you to understand and for your providers to act on.

An ADHD tools workbook with strategies for focus, time management, organization, and emotional regulation. Practical, immediately applicable, useful whether or not the assessment confirms ADHD.

If ADHD is confirmed, the report becomes your entry point to medication and targeted treatment. If it’s not, the report explains what’s driving the symptoms you’ve been experiencing and recommends what to pursue next. In both cases, you leave with a clearer understanding of your brain and a concrete plan.

More about me

Frequently Asked Questions About Adult ADHD Assessment in Washington, D.C.

Can I do this assessment online from D.C.? Yes. I’m licensed to provide telehealth services to adults in Washington, D.C. The assessment takes place over a secure, HIPAA-compliant video platform.

Will I get a clear answer about ADHD from this assessment? Yes. If your symptoms meet DSM-5 criteria for ADHD, the report documents diagnostic impressions of ADHD with clinical rationale, including how the criteria are met. If they don’t meet criteria, the report explains what the assessment found, what else may be driving the symptoms, and recommended next steps.

Can I use this report to pursue ADHD medication? Yes. The report is written in a format prescribers can use in their decision-making. Many psychiatrists, nurse practitioners, and primary care physicians accept a comprehensive clinical assessment as part of their evaluation. Prescribing decisions are ultimately made by the medical provider.

How is this different from online ADHD screenings? Most online ADHD assessments are screening tools that flag whether ADHD might be present. This is a full clinical assessment using the DIVA-5, a validated diagnostic interview conducted by a licensed clinician. It’s a thorough diagnostic evaluation. The written report documents your history, symptoms, functional impacts, and diagnostic findings.

What can I use the report for, and what is it NOT for? The report supports prescriber conversations about ADHD medication, provides a clinical baseline for ADHD-specific therapy or coaching, and gives you a documented understanding of how ADHD is showing up in your life.

Important: this report is NOT designed to support: - Formal workplace accommodations (ADA requests for extra time, schedule changes, or other modifications at your job) - Academic accommodations (extra time on tests, note-taking support, or other modifications at school or in college) - Disability determinations (SSDI, SSI, or private disability insurance claims) - Court-ordered or forensic evaluations

Each of those typically requires a full neuropsychological evaluation, which is a more extensive process involving multiple appointments and standardized cognitive testing. If you need an evaluation for any of those purposes, please tell me before booking and I’ll refer you to a qualified provider.

Do you accept insurance? No, this is a private-pay service. The $900 flat fee covers the complete assessment, report, and workbook.

When will I receive my report? Within 7 to 10 business days after your appointment.
