What Manhattan adults often notice when they suspect ADHD

The systems that used to carry you don't anymore: the all-nighters that worked in college, the morning panic-burst that produced great work in your twenties, the planner you kept religiously for six months and then abandoned, the app you downloaded with high hopes that's now buried on your phone. Your job has gotten more complex, the stakes have gotten higher, and the strategies that worked before are buckling under what they used to handle.

Your annual reviews say the same thing every year: "great when engaged," "inconsistent," "has so much potential." You've heard "potential" often enough that the word has started to feel like a critique. The work you do is good when you finally do it, but the gap between when you should start and when you start has been growing.

You've been treated for anxiety, or depression, or both. The medication helped some, the therapy helped some, but the underlying issue never moved: the focus, the follow-through, the constant sense of working at fifty percent and being exhausted by it. You're starting to wonder if you've been treating the symptoms of something else the whole time.

The story you've been telling yourself about all of this hurts more than anything else: that you're lazy, that you lack discipline, that you're not as capable as people think. The story has been with you since middle school, and it doesn't stop generating evidence even when you do good work, because each piece of good work feels like an exception that proves how much potential you're failing to use.

What an ADHD answer changes

The question you've been carrying for years (am I lazy, undisciplined, depressed, or is something else going on) gets a clinical answer. You stop opening Reddit threads at 11pm trying to figure out if your symptoms match. You stop wondering if you're imagining it. You have a documented clinical assessment with diagnostic impressions, and the not-knowing is over.

The story that's been the loudest part of all of this (lazy, undisciplined, not as capable as people think) gets a different explanation, one that comes from a clinician who's just spent two hours assessing your specific picture. The story doesn't disappear overnight, but each future forgotten thing stops going automatically into the same old pile.

You bring the report home and your partner finally has clinical language for what they've been seeing for years. The conversation about the forgotten dentist appointments, the unreturned calls, the bills you said you'd handle can start somewhere different than it usually does. Where it goes from there is up to you both. What you don't have to keep doing is having the conversation from inside the lazy-or-don't-care frame.

You walk into your next annual review with clinical language for what your manager has been calling "inconsistent." Whether you choose to share the report or just use the framework to think differently about the feedback, the meeting doesn't have to land the same way it has every year. "Has so much potential" has a different meaning when you understand the structural reason the potential hasn't been getting realized.

You take the report to a prescriber and the medication conversation has structure instead of you trying to advocate for your symptoms from scratch. Whether stimulant medication is appropriate for your situation, and whether it works if you try it, is between you and your prescriber. The final prescribing decision rests with the medical provider. What changes is that you stop being one of many patients describing vague concerns and become a patient bringing a clinical document.

The career questions you've been making decisions on blind start to have criteria. You know which work conditions consistently fail you (open-ended deliverables, self-directed timelines, work that requires you to invent your own structure) and which ones consistently work (external deadlines, project-based assignments, a teammate counting on you). The workbook gives you strategies to try on your own, or to take into therapy or coaching. The work going forward has a starting point you didn't have before.

How the assessment works

The assessment is conducted over two hours of secure video. We work through your current symptoms, how things have been since you were a kid, and how it shows up at work, at home, and in relationships.

The structure uses the DIVA-5, the standard tool for evaluating adult ADHD, mapped to DSM-5 criteria. By the end of the appointment, we have a thorough picture of whether ADHD fits what you've been experiencing.

Within 7 to 10 business days, you receive your written report and an ADHD tools workbook.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can adults outside of Manhattan work with you? Yes. All sessions are virtual, so any adult in New York can work with me regardless of where in the state you're based. Manhattan is the home base for this page because the professional and creative-class demographic in the borough fits the work especially well.

Will I get a clear answer about ADHD from this assessment? Yes. If your symptoms meet DSM-5 criteria for ADHD, the report documents diagnostic impressions of ADHD with clinical rationale, including how the criteria are met. If they don't meet criteria, the report explains what the assessment found, what else may be driving the symptoms, and recommended next steps.

Do you take insurance? No. This is a private-pay service. The flat fee covers the full assessment, report, and workbook.

I work demanding hours. How do I fit the assessment into my schedule? Sessions are scheduled in two-hour blocks at times that work for your calendar, including evenings and early mornings when possible. Most Manhattan clients find that scheduling a single two-hour appointment is easier than coordinating multi-appointment evaluations elsewhere.

What can I use the report for, and what is it NOT for? The report supports prescriber conversations about ADHD medication, gives a therapist or ADHD coach a specific clinical baseline, and provides you with a detailed understanding of your own ADHD profile.

Important: this report is NOT designed to support:

  • Formal workplace accommodations (ADA requests for extra time, schedule changes, or other modifications at your job)

  • Academic accommodations (extra time on tests, note-taking support, or other modifications at school or in college)

  • Disability determinations (SSDI, SSI, or private disability insurance claims)

  • Court-ordered or forensic evaluations

Each of those typically requires a full neuropsychological evaluation, which is a more extensive process involving multiple appointments and standardized cognitive testing. If you need an evaluation for any of those purposes, please tell me before booking and I'll refer you to a qualified provider.

How do I get started? Use the booking link to schedule your assessment, or reach out with questions first if you'd prefer.

About Your Clinician: Grace Annan, LICSW, LCSW-QS

I'm Grace Annan, a licensed clinical social worker whose practice focuses on adult experiences that don't fit standard categories: ARFID and adult eating disorders, body image work for women navigating body change, adult ADHD and autism assessments, and the overlap between these conditions.

Adult ADHD assessment is a core part of this work because so many adults arrive at the question of ADHD through long-term anxiety, depression, or burnout.
