What Edison adults often notice when they suspect ADHD

The systems that used to work for you don't anymore: the all-nighters in college, the morning panic-burst that produced great work in your twenties, the planner you kept religiously for six weeks and then abandoned, the app you downloaded with high hopes that's now buried on your phone.

Your job has gotten more complex, the stakes have gotten higher, and the strategies that worked before are buckling under what they used to be able to handle.

You've been treated for anxiety, or depression, or both. The medication helped some, the therapy helped some, but the underlying issue stayed: the focus, the follow-through, the sense that things are just harder for you than they are for others around you.

You're starting to wonder if you've been treating the symptoms of something else the whole time.

Time doesn't work for you the way it seems to work for other people. An hour disappears into a task you thought would take twenty minutes. Or you wake up convinced you have plenty of time, look up an hour later, and realize you're going to be late again. The promise to leave fifteen minutes early never quite happens. The cushion you tried to build into the schedule keeps getting absorbed by the thing you sat down to do quickly that turned into the morning.

You've been considering whether you're in the wrong job. The role looked right from the outside, but it requires the kind of self-directed structure that consistently breaks down for you.

You're not sure if the right next move is a different role, a different industry, or a different way of working entirely. The decision feels too big to make without understanding why the current setup keeps failing you.

What an ADHD answer changes

You stop wondering. The question that's been with you for years (do I have ADHD or is something else going on) gets answered through a structured clinical assessment. The diagnostic impressions are documented in writing. Whether the answer is ADHD, something adjacent, or something else, you walk away with clinical clarity instead of another month of suspicion.

You stop adding every missed deadline and forgotten errand to the lazy-undisciplined column. The story you've been telling yourself since middle school (that you're not trying hard enough, that you lack discipline, that you're not as capable as people think) has a different explanation. The next time you forget something, the meaning of the forgetting changes, even if the forgetting itself doesn't stop right away.

Your partner reads the report and stops interpreting your forgotten promises as a values problem. The next conversation about the unreturned text, the missed appointment, the bill you said you'd pay starts from a clinical frame instead of a moral one. Whether you both build systems together, find a couples therapist, or just have one different conversation, the framing has changed.

You walk into your next annual review with clinical language for what your manager has been calling "inconsistent." Whether you choose to share the report or just use the framework to think differently about the feedback, the meeting doesn't have to land the same way it has every year. "Has so much potential" has a different meaning when you understand the structural reason the potential hasn't been getting realized.

The report becomes the document you bring to your psychiatrist or primary care provider. The medication conversation finally has a clinical foundation. The anxiety treatment that helped some but didn't reach the underlying focus problem can be recalibrated around what's underneath it, if your prescriber decides that's appropriate. The final prescribing decision rests with your medical provider, but the conversation starts from a different place.

The career questions you've been making decisions on blind start to have criteria. You know which work conditions consistently fail you (open-ended deliverables, self-directed timelines, work that requires you to invent your own structure) and which ones consistently work (external deadlines, project-based assignments, a teammate counting on you). The workbook gives you strategies to try on your own, or to take into therapy or coaching. The work going forward has a starting point you didn't have before.

How the assessment works

The clinical interview takes two hours over secure video. The structure follows the DIVA-5, the standard diagnostic interview for adult ADHD, mapped to DSM-5 criteria. We walk through your current symptoms, how things showed up earlier in your life, and the impact across work, relationships, and daily functioning. The assessment also screens for co-occurring conditions like anxiety and depression.

Within 7 to 10 business days, you receive a comprehensive written report and an ADHD tools workbook.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can adults outside of Edison work with you? Yes. Sessions are virtual, which means any adult in New Jersey can work with me regardless of where in the state you're based.

Will I get a clear answer about ADHD from this assessment? Yes. If your symptoms meet DSM-5 criteria for ADHD, the report documents diagnostic impressions of ADHD with clinical rationale, including how the criteria are met. If they don't meet criteria, the report explains what the assessment found, what else may be driving the symptoms, and recommended next steps.

Is insurance accepted? The assessment is private-pay. The $900 flat fee covers the diagnostic interview, the written report, and the ADHD tools workbook.

I'm being treated for anxiety but I'm starting to wonder if ADHD is also part of the picture. What does the assessment offer for that situation? Very common situation. The assessment includes specific screening for anxiety and depression so the overlap with ADHD gets accounted for clearly. The report documents what fits ADHD, what fits anxiety or depression, and how the conditions relate in your case. Many clients use the report to revisit their current treatment with their prescriber or therapist, often resulting in a more targeted approach.

What can I use the report for, and what is it NOT for? The report supports prescriber conversations about ADHD medication, gives a therapist or ADHD coach a specific clinical baseline, and provides you with a detailed understanding of your own ADHD profile.

Important: this report is NOT designed to support:

  • Formal workplace accommodations (ADA requests for extra time, schedule changes, or other modifications at your job)

  • Academic accommodations (extra time on tests, note-taking support, or other modifications at school or in college)

  • Disability determinations (SSDI, SSI, or private disability insurance claims)

  • Court-ordered or forensic evaluations

Each of those typically requires a full neuropsychological evaluation, which is a more extensive process involving multiple appointments and standardized cognitive testing. If you need an evaluation for any of those purposes, please tell me before booking and I'll refer you to a qualified provider.

How do I schedule? Schedule through the online booking link, or reach out with any questions before booking. I'll respond within 1-2 business days with details about onboarding.

About Your Clinician: Grace Annan, LICSW, LCSW-QS

I'm Grace Annan, a licensed clinical social worker whose practice focuses on adult experiences that don't fit standard categories: ARFID and adult eating disorders, body image work for women navigating body change, adult ADHD and autism assessments, and the overlap between these conditions.

Adult ADHD assessment is a core part of this work because so many adults arrive at the question of ADHD through long-term anxiety, depression, or burnout.
